LaRonge & Canadian Space Agency Downlink (Event)
Added on August 20th, 2007
On August 20th, 2007, the Saskatchewan Research Network (SRnet), in conjunction with Saskatchewan Learning and the Canadian Space Agency, connected the Churchill Community High School in La Ronge to Canadian astronaut Dave Williams, at the International Space Station (on board the NASA shuttle Endeavour).
Students from CCHS were allowed to submit questions to the Canadian Space Agency ahead of time, and the CSA selected the eight best questions, allowing those students to ask Williams in real-time. Representatives were eagerly attending the event, including the minister of Northern Affairs, the Chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, a representative of Northlands College, the mayors of La Ronge and Air Ronge, and the regional director from Saskatchewan Learning.
The event had been in the planning for more than a year, and the concept was made possible when Cyril Scheske of SRnet undertook a large project to lay fibre into northern Saskatchewan and connect La Ronge, allowing endless possibilities for research and education for the northern city.

CA*net 4 ORAN Infrastructure Program: Exploration, Extension, Expansion (Project)
Added on March 31st, 2007
SRnet’s intent was to expand its network beyond the Regina/Saskatoon axis through Prince Albert to La Ronge to enable education, research, and health institutions (including aboriginal institutions) in Saskatchewan’s north to access SRnet and CA*net. Concurrent and integral to the La Ronge expansion was a thrust to expand SRnet into the community by connecting the Regina Qu’Appelle and Saskatoon Health Districts including the 5 base hospitals and the U of S Medical School to facilitate research and education activities. Expansion to the Prince Albert and La Ronge hospitals was also explored.
SRnet sought to ensure that any research, education and health organizations in the province that could utilize a research and education network were made aware of SRnet’s presence and capabilities. It was SRnet’s goal to increase its membership to ensure that the research and education capacity of the province was strengthened and the long term sustainability of SRnet was secured.
